Definition 2.1.

A projective variety XX has canonical singularities if it is normal, if rKXrK_{X} is Cartier for some r≥1r\geq 1 and if there exists a resolution f:Y→Xf:Y\to X such that

rKY=f∗(rKX)+∑iaiEi,rK_{Y}=f^{*}(rK_{X})+\sum_{i}a_{i}E_{i},

where EiE_{i} ranges over all exceptional prime divisors of ff, and ai≥0a_{i}\geq 0.
